Members of Spirit of Football celebrated the 150th anniversary of the first Association Football match, played in Battersea Park on January 9th 1864.
The match preceded the unveiling of a (soon to be) blue plaque at the Cricket Pavilion commemorating the anniversary, and the presentation of a ball that will travel through Europe, North America and South America to the World Cup in Brazil later this year.
The (soon to be) blue plaque was unveiled by Ravi Govindia, leader of Wandsworth Council.
Spirit of Football say “Every four years, The Ball travels from England to the World Cup and immerses itself in the passion and excitement of the people it encounters. The Ball explores and celebrates how football enriches their lives and shares their stories with a global audience. The Ball leaves an enduring legacy in its wake by connecting people and organisations together in mutually beneficial ways.“
