The Park has long had a Cherry Tree Avenue, although the trees suffered from disease around the millennium.image
Thanks to the generosity of the governor of Nara province in Japan, and the order of monks responsible for the upkeep of the Peace Pagoda, the Cheery Tree walk was replanted in 2004. In total forty trees were donated, of the very pale pink Yoshino variety, that grows wild on the hillsides of Nara. They are expected to grow to about 12 – 14 feet high.
A few of the original trees remain but most are in a poor state of health and will need to be replaced. The Park management has been concerned for some time about this much loved and very beautiful feature, especially with the high cost of replacement. There were thoughts about having a number of different varieties of cherry tree along the walk but it was felt that the impact of having all the trees coming into bloom at the same time would create the best effect.
